Persons behind the "Spiral Archives": Petri Suhonen mixing and mastering . Janne has known Petri´s family for several years. Maybe ten years ago Petri was something like 16 years old and he started to talk about 'computer music that I make with my old pc ' and tracker software etc. All kind of things that I do not know nothing. I was still having my 'band centered view' of music so I was not so interested of this new kind of 'techno' music. Then, one day Petri send me a mail and he told to me about his new project called 'PrimoLux: turnpoint'. He had somehow contacted the Galactive Label and got his song to be published as vinyl single ! I had a change to hear the 'proto' version and later I got the LP "Petri, your music sounds much better than Darude or anything I know from techno scene, this is amazing ! . Soon I started to respect Petri as 'sound genius'. As I was stucked totally with my own 'analog' based music, Petri gave me something new to listen and to think with many interesting demos. And finally I asked him to 'combine' the tracks I had choosen for 'Spiral Archives'. Several times we 'ping-ponged' the tracks via our FTP services and Petri added special effects and shifting sequences from one song to another. Then he uploaded the latest version which I downloaded to my system. I then added some 'moog' (tm) sounds and so on. Before the master mix, we did some fine tuning with very low and high tones This was first time I started to understand the meaning of mastering and how it can change the quality of the recording Ofcource if we both would have totally samekind of systems, the quality could be even better..but...we both found that our systems ( Petri as windows-based and me as unix ) made good combination. My original analog-based synth recordings sounded rich , and Petri´s system was good for handling all original tracks and later added new tracks as one 'project'. Actually
we never met during the project. Everything was done in the 'net'. So this
was also a trial for this kind of collaboration. We both agreeded that
we shall continue in the future with another projects.

Petri "in his own words": Computers
and other technical equipments have been interesting me since childhood.
Some day I noticed that I can make music or strange sounds with PC. I am
lacking formal musical education, but it wasn´t preventing me to
start composing my own music. Soon I specialized to electronic music. I
found the elements in the electronic music so interesting.
As time passes, I updated my computer and software. Soon I started to concentrate to electronic dance music like ‘techno’ or ‘trance’. At year 2003 I made several tracks as “PrimoLux”. They were published under ‘Galactive’ label in Neederlands. The song called “Turnpoint” was once number one in Dutch dance charts ! After my ”PrimoLux” project my friend Janne gave me some ’NÖE’ tracks to listen. I found them very interesting. So, we started to talk about collaboration. And we stopped the talking and started to work together. Janne finalized several nöe-tracks for ‘space’ project. My task was to combine songs and make the ‘unification’ for all individual tracks. I added ofcource some effects and other stuff for the tracks. At first I had to decide the order of the songs. After several listening sessions, I made the decision and the mixing started to have its form. For each track I gave its own tracks and effect channel for the adjustment and for the ‘shifting parts’ in the middle of the songs. Their meaning was to transport the ‘story’ from one song to another. There was a lot of ‘cross-fading’ used from song, and back to original song. In the program I used, it was easy to ’draw’ the dynamics for songs in real time and that made mixing easier. When the mix was ready, I rendered it to normal audio file, and sended it to Janne through ‘net’. Janne created the spoken parts and other vocals which I mixed into ‘master project’. For the vocals I used compression and eq-adjustments. The final ‘Spiral Archives’ started to have its form ! I believe that the final ‘Spiral Archives’ sound very good indeed and suits fine to this kind of ‘space stuff’. There is ‘ups and downs’, cooling down and exploding material together nicely. This was first time for me as ‘master mixer’. It took a lot of time ( more than one year.) and effort but I was worth of it ! I learned many new technique which I can use in my own works. I also learned to listen other kind of music than dance music. ‘Ambient’ or ‘old-school electronica’ is now familiar for me. And I am sure that there will be more projects like this with Janne. - Petri
